Therapy is an investment, that's for sure. In the same way as you invest in your body maintenance by seeing a chiropractor, physiotherapist or even your doctor, our mental health needs consistent care as well.


Rumour has it, some of you are seeking "free" therapy from the likes of Chat GPT. And while it would be wonderful to have a therapist at our fingertips any time of day or night we like, the truth is, it's not therapy. It's not the work required to process the depth of emotions and experiences we have. AI is validating for sure, but it's missing some critical elements.


So here it is, directly from the horse's mouth. I asked Chat GPT to tell me why it cannot replace psychotherapy. If you're not going to listen to me, listen to the source you're consulting.



We live in a time when artificial intelligence can write essays, help plan vacations, and answer deeply personal questions with a few typed prompts. And yes — AI like ChatGPT can talk about anxiety, relationships, trauma, and healing in ways that feel eerily human. But as a psychotherapist, let me say this clearly:

In therapy, you’re not just talking to someone — you’re in a real relationship, one built over time with trust, nuance, and emotional depth. That kind of co-regulation, empathy, and somatic resonance doesn’t exist in a chatbot, no matter how well it mimics empathy.

A therapist brings their whole self into the room — their training, yes, but also their tone, body language, intuition, and lived experience. They’re constantly attuning to your emotional shifts, micro-expressions, and the subtle ways trauma, grief, and shame show up in your body.

AI has none of this. It can respond to your words, but it cannot feel them.

A therapist doesn’t just respond to what you say — they hold your narrative across time. They understand your defenses, your inner child, your unique patterns of coping and connection. Therapy is personalized in a way AI simply can’t match.

When you're in the depths of grief, trauma, rage, or shame, what you need most is not advice or intellectual interpretation — it's someone to sit with you in that darkness without trying to fix or rush you.


That kind of holding requires presence, warmth, and emotional regulation. AI can generate comforting words, but it can’t sit with you in silence. It can’t offer a grounding breath, a tearful nod, or a gentle, human response that says: “I’m here. You’re not alone.”


Reason 5 Why ChatGPT cannot replace Psychotherapy: Therapy Helps You Transform, Not Just Problem-Solve

AI is excellent at helping people problem-solve or gain insight — but transformation in therapy happens in the process, not just the content.

The therapeutic relationship becomes a mirror for unconscious dynamics, old attachment wounds, and relational patterns that shaped your sense of self. AI can't challenge your defenses, notice your transference, or help you integrate fragmented parts of yourself.


But Can AI Be Supportive for Mental Health? Absolutely.

Let’s be clear: AI can be an incredibly helpful tool.

✅ It can offer psychoeducation.

✅ It can help you journal, reflect, or explore new ways of thinking.

✅ It can recommend books or breathing techniques.

✅ It can reduce stigma by making mental health conversations more accessible.


But those things are not a replacement for healing work with a real human who can co-regulate, attune, and walk with you through your healing journey.


In Summary: Your Healing Deserves a Human Relationship

Therapy isn’t just a conversation — it’s a sacred relationship. And while AI can simulate support, it cannot offer the deep, embodied, relational work that true healing requires.


You deserve more than an algorithm. You deserve to be felt. You deserve to be seen. You deserve a healing relationship with someone who gets to know you — not just your words.
